Formerly Inspection and Testing of Portable Appliances
Inspection and testing of electrical equipment should be carried out by persons who have adequate knowledge and experience of electrical work so as not to put themselves and others in danger. This is a requirement of the present legislation.
Non-skilled personnel can be trained to carry out basic inspection procedures and how to assemble power plugs. Please note that over 85% of plug tops are incorrectly wired. In addition, about 95% of plug top fuses are inappropriate for the appliance they are supplying.
Non-skilled personnel can also be trained to use a simple PAT tester. Under no circumstances should such personnel attempt to repair electrical appliances and equipment. When an apparent fault is located, or there is non-compliance with the present legislation or HSE procedures, the appliance or equipment should be referred to skilled electrical personnel.
Please note there are two assessments. The first assessment is a practical test. You will be assessed during the course. The second is in the form of an on line multiple choice test. Basic use of a computer is required. (If you need some training on the use of a computer, this will be given to you free of charge on the day of the training course). The test is an open book test, candidates should purchase a copy of ‘Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment’ 3rd Edition. This multiple choice test will take place one week after the training course.
