MA in Shakespeare and Contemporary Performance
Full-Time Programme
A Masters course taught in collaboration with Globe Education at Shakespeare's Globe.
How are Shakespeare's four-hundred-year-old scripts brought to life in today's Lodon theatre? What intellectual and historical approaches are best suited to analysing and understanding the results? Based at Birkbeck College, University of London, a world-class research and teaching institution conveniently situated in the heart of London between the British Library and the theatres of the West End, and incorporating a term's study of the rehearsal process at Shakespeare's Globe on Bankside, this course brings together performance studies, cultural theory, modern theatre history and the detailed study of the Shakespearean text to give its students the fullest possible understanding of how live Shakespeare works now.
Students will study with Birkbeck's experts in Shakespeare, theatre studies and cultural theory, and with faculty and theatre artists from Globe Education's Courses and Research department; the course also features sessions with visiting scholars and theatre practitioners, who may include members of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Cheek by Jowl, and the National Theatre. All students will be encouraged to play an active role in the Globe Education Research department, undertaking research projects to support the preparations for the Globe theatre season. They will also participate in relevant public discussions between theatre makers, critics and scholars staged by Birkbeck's cutting-edge Centre for Contemporary Theatre.
