Gordon MacLellan
Creeping Toad
Creeping Toad is Gordon MacLellan. Described as "one of Britain's leading environmental educators", Gordon is a trained ecologist and experienced teacher. He has worked with people of all ages in education for many years as a school teacher, a countryside warden, an FE lecturer and heritage interpretation officer. With an additional background as an artist, dancer and storyteller, he now combines scientific and expressive fields to offer challenging and exciting activities.
Course programme
Students will learn the process of making cleft oak shingles from round wood using hand tools. They will experience the beauty of cleaving wood with the froe along its grain and using side-axe, drawknife and shaving horse to dress one side of the shingle. Students will also learn the importance of selecting suitable material.
By the end of the course participants should:

Ø Know how to use the appropriate hand tools safely and effectively

About the Tutor: Darren Hammerton has been leading enjoyable and educational woodland and countryside courses at the Sustainability Centre for many years and runs his business ‘Out of the Woods’ from the Centre grounds. Out of the Woods specialises in traditional timber frame buildings and woodland products. They use local oak to produce unique, handmade buildings and furniture and undertake traditional coppicing skills, woodland management and conservation.
