About this course


The final Business Transformation Project will allow you to analyse a current issue affecting your company or the industry, using real world data and presenting realistic action points. This project is not only integral to the achievement of programme outcomes but will prove invaluable to your company or industry sector.

To successfully complete the programme you must pass each module and the final Business Transformation Project. Module assessments will incorporate course work, online discussion participation, examinations and individual and group projects.

The MBA is the result of exhaustive research and has been developed in conjunction with maritime and logistics industry leaders, shipping executives, well regarded academics and the next generation of management.

MBA in Shipping and Logistics Programme Syllabus

Induction

The MBA begins with a compulsory two week induction providing students with the opportunity to access and familiarise themselves with our state of the art online learning portal and other resources available throughout the programme. There are some compulsory short exercises during this period to allow introductions to the subject, the faculty and fellow peers.

Shipping Business and International Trade (20 Credits)

The first module will develop your advanced understanding of the context in which the maritime world operates. It will lay the foundation for; the economics of the maritime industry, the characteristics of demand and supply and their interaction in the various maritime markets; the strategic environment of maritime policy and administration; the key principles of maritime law.

Business Strategy (30 Credits)

This module aims to equip you with a detailed understanding of the key developments in, and thinking derived from, the study of strategy. You will;
explore models and theories of strategy and their application in the business environment; investigate the key developments in, and thinking derived from, the study of strategy; critically appraise where and when such models are useful and how to utilise them; explore fascinating and relevant examples and exercises that illustrate these concepts with the intent of building your strategic thinking capability.

Executive Leadership (30 Credits)

Focusing upon the critical issue of people and their performance in the particular context of the maritime industry, this module; illustrates how the processes of contemporary human resource management supports organisational performance; explores the key elements of the HR cycle including resourcing, managing performance and developing and rewarding staff; identifies areas of overlap between management and leadership and investigates competences and behaviours associated with management and leadership; develops leadership behaviours that will enable students to manage performance as well as lead change to improve overall organisational performance.

Advanced International Marketing (20 Credits)

Exploring marketing and communication strategies in the context of shipping/logistics organisations, this module will; equip you with the skills to analyse current marketing strategies and apply appropriate techniques based on insights gained; develop your ability to identify critical actions that enhance profitability; help you create a strategic marketing and communications strategy and to outline the business case for implementation.

Finance and Risk Management (20 Credits)

This highly topical module looks at the critical issues of finance and risk. It is designed to help you develop an enhanced knowledge of sector financing and the management of the major risks in shipping. In particular, you will; evaluate the various finance methods available for shipping companies; critically assess the techniques of investment appraisal under risky and uncertain situations in the shipping industry; explore the traditional and emerging methods of risk management and derivatives instruments in shipping.

Optimising Business Performance (30 Credits)

The final taught module will focus upon the development of shipping within the logistics supply chain. You will build your project management skills along with developing an understanding of research and development (R&D) and innovation within the context of shipping logistics. The objective is to provide awareness, knowledge and insight into the organisations need for constant attention to technical, cultural, social and environmental change in the global shipping and logistics sectors. You will; explore the role of research and development in the context of historic, contemporary and future operations and technologies define and delineate the key principles of maritime logistics
evaluate the need for innovation in the constant management of change
integrate and apply the principles of project management in attaining and sustaining operational and technical leadership in the maritime supply chain.

Business Transformation Project (30 Credits)

Written to the same standard as a dissertation, the project will provide you with the opportunity to further develop the skills you gained through the modules by applying them to a specific organisational issue or problem. You will demonstrate your proficiency in the design of a business enhancement project including the application of appropriate methods of investigation, management of the change process and maintenance of vision, within the constraints of the real world business environment.
