Shooting Drama
Course Outline
Students will be sent a copy of the script a few
days in advance of the course.
Session 1 - Friday 2nd May
2008 10am - 5.30pm
Your responsibilities
Introduction to the
responsibilities of different roles of a camera crew: Director,Camera
Operator, Boom op, Script supervisor, Gaffer, Art department and Runner.
Students will take on each role in turn and come away with an idea of
which areas interest them.
Technical familiarisation
Students
will learn how to set up the full sized professional DSR 250 DVCAM digital
camera equipment. They will learn some of the principles of camera
movement, composition, lighting and sound recording.
Directing

Reading the script as a director.
· Shot selection and it's affect
on the audience.
· What shots do you need to cover your scene?
·
Working with actors
· Marking up the script!
HOMEWORK:
Each student should plan the coverage of the scene they are directing.
Session 2 - Saturday 3rd May 2008 Shoot 10am - 5.30pm
1st day
shoot. In rotation, students will take on each of the crews roles and
responsibilities practised previous session. The student directing each
segment will have a strict time slot in which to shoot their section of
the script.
Session 3 - Sunday 4th may 2008 Shoot 10am - 5.30pm
2nd
day of shoot. As Above!
Session 4 - Monday 5th May 2008 (May Bank
Holiday) 10am - 5.30pm
The students will be split into two groups; one
group will digitise the tapes and create an assembly of the first half of
the film, and the other group the second half of the film. The students
will use Premiere Pro software and be supported by Simon and an
experienced editor.
Students will pay particular attention to the
scene they directed, and when digitising, check the log for any mistakes
and add any notes about preferred takes etc. Students will watch the rough
cut of their half of the film watching out for potential problems and
coming up with ideasfor improvements.
Session 5 - Tuesday 6th May
2008 10am - 5.30pm
Working with Simon and the Editor, the group will
discuss the creative side of editing. Why are we cutting? When to cut? How
are we affecting the audience? How does the music and sound impact on the
production?
By the end of the day the drama production will be
completed and there will be a projected screening for the group.
At
the end of the course everyone will receive a DVD copy of your finished
video.
This course includes a Level 3 Open College Network
Developing Video and Film Production Skills accreditation.
(Please
note you can only gain this certificate once. If you have already achieved
accreditation on another OFVM course eg Experimental film& video you will
not get again.)
