Shooting Video - Your first step into video
Course Outline
Pre-Production
WEEK 1: 05/05/09 Screening of previous course work and related films and videos. Introduction to video production and first look at the video cameras. (7.00pm - 9.30pm)
WEEK 2: 12/05/09 Shooting scripts and storyboarding. Camera shot types and camera movements. The students divide into two production groups and develop ideas for shoot discussing ideas on form, style and content. (7.00pm - 9.30pm)
WEEK 3: 19/05/09 The use of sound, looking at the various ways sound can enhance a video. Sound recording and microphone operation with a practice shoot. (7.00pm - 9.30pm)
WEEK 4: 26/05/09 Lighting - The use of lighting to enhance video, lighting to create mood and atmosphere. Use of full lighting kit with practice shoot. (7.00pm - 9.30pm)
WEEK 5: 02/06/09 Rehearsal shoot - Full production kit use - Camera, microphones and lighting. Adoption of production team roles shooting a predesignated storyboard. (7.00pm - 9.30pm)
WEEK 6: 09/06/09 Edit suite introduction and planning meeting for shoot. (7.00pm - 9.30pm)
Students will probably need to meet in their production groups at other times during the course in preparation for the shoot.
Production
WEEK 6: 13/06/09 or 14/06/09 Shoot weekend.
During this week, both groups will go out on location to shoot their productions; this takes place at the weekend. Each group has 6 hours in which to shoot the video and in this time every member of the group rotates production roles, taking it in turns to direct, operate the camera, the lights and sound record, etc. (Saturday or Sunday depending on group 10.00am - 6.00pm.)
Post-Production
WEEK 7: 16/06/09 Viewing of rushes, logging and creating edit decision list, Digitising picture and sound rushes, setting up your project and beginning the edit. (7.00pm - 10.00pm)
WEEK 8: (Consists of usual evening class on Tuesday evening plus editing day on Sunday)
Tuesday: 23/06/09: Completion of rough cut of rushes, commence fine edit. (7.00pm - 10.00pm)
Sunday: 28/06/09: Fine cut editing and sound track make up, adding graphics for titling. Completion of fine cut edit and final sound track mixing and making up of edit master. Screening of finished video and critique. We will also hold a discussion on progression routes for students.
Further education options and follow-on courses available and careers advice. Your tutor will also be able to give advice on personal video projects that you may have and would like to pursue. (12pm-6pm - note no lunch break so bring a pack lunch)
NB: Course content may change according to participants needs.
At the end of the course, everyone will receive a VHS copy of your finished video and - after moderation of the work produced - a certificate from the Open College Network equivalent to a NVQ2 or GNVQ intermediate.
All work produced on OFVM courses receives at least one public screening, usually in the following term to the course, at the Pegasus Theatre on Magdalen Rd (5 minutes' walk from OFVM).
