SIA Security Guard Training

If you want to work as a Security Guard in England and Wales, you need to have a licence issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA), which was set up by the government to regulate the private security industry. Without a licence, you can’t legally work on as a Security Guard.

To get an SIA licence you will need to satisfy three requirements:

Pass an identity check,

Pass a criminal records check, and Possess a recognised Security Guard qualification.

What is the recognised qualification I need?

Holding a recognised door supervisor qualification is part of the SIA’s requirements to obtain a licence to practice. Guardwatch Training offers the Level 2 National Certificate for Security Guards. In order to achieve this qualification, learners must successfully complete two examinations:

Unit 1 Roles and Responsibilities

  • Introduction, Roles and Responsibilities
  • Behavioral Standards
  • Equal Opportunities
  • Civil and Criminal Law
  • Arrest
  • Licensing Law
  • Searching
  • Health and Safety at Work
  • Drugs Awareness
  • Recording Incidents and Crime Scene Preservation
  • Emergency Procedures

Unit 2 Communication and Conflict Management

  • Introduction to Communication Skills and Conflict Management
  • Self Awareness
  • Avoiding Conflict
  • Effective Communication and Customer Service Skills
  • Recognising High Risk Conflict
  • Resolving Conflict
  • Learning from Conflict

If you already hold a Security Guard qualification

If you already hold a door supervisors qualification, you may be fully or partially exempt from taking the new qualification. Full details of exemptions can be found on the SIA website, table ‘Accreditation of Prior Learning’ or by calling Guardwatch Training.

The course will take 15 hours (2 days) per unit including the examinations. 30 hours (4 days) in total.

The qualification will be recognised by the SIA when you apply for a licence and is accredited by QCA.

The qualification consists of two units:

This includes administration polices and procedures, effusing entry, searching, seizing articles, eviction, use of force and offensive weapons, how to comply with the law, drugs, arrest, scene preservation and report writing.

This includes managing conflict by applying dynamic risk approaches, understanding the importance of self-awareness and being proactive, how to defuse conflict by overcoming communication blocks, signalling non-aggression and managing high-risk situations, how to resolve conflict, and how to learn from conflict.

There are two examinations, one per unit. Each examination will have forty multiple-choice questions and will take one hour. What are the entry requirements?

There are no specific experience or qualifications that you will need in order to do this course.

All students will be issued with a handbook, with the outline of the course content. This will contain all the knowledge required to pass the examination.
