About this course

Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions
Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
Safely mount and dismount the machine
Start and stop the engine and safely move the machine off and stop it safely
Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely laden and unladen, in open and confined areas
Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out lifting and load handling tasks
Carry out lifting and load handling tasks
Lift and transfer loads accurately and safely at different locations
Load and unload external transport safely
Fit, adjust and or remove attachments
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Course programme

All Lift Truck Operator courses can be tailored to suit individual business needs and all course syllabuses are approved by the relevant accrediting body and training conducted to their approved standards. Courses also comply with the Health & Safety Executives Guidance HSG6 & Approved Code of Practice L117 (Link to HSE Website) and in following both the guidance and code of practice you can be assured that the training is sufficient to comply with the law.

Course (depending on type) includes:

  • The need for training & risks associated with lift truck operations & the causes of accidents.
  • Information on Statutory Legal requirements & associated regulations, including operators’ responsibilities to themselves & others.
  • Basic construction & main components of the lift truck including its principles of operation and load handling capabilities and capacities at various load centre distances.
  • Information on the stability characteristics and factors affecting machine stability.
  • The inspection & basic maintenance tasks appropriate to operators as required by the manufacturers and any relevant legislation.
  • The location, purpose & method of use of all controls & instruments, including any specific load handling attachments which may be used.
  • Manoeuvring exercises loaded & unloaded in forwards & reverse over varying terrain & differing operating conditions including safe operating practices & precautions on rough terrain, slopes and in confined areas.
  • Identification, assessment & handling of various forms of load including safe operating practices for picking up & depositing from bulk stacks, warehouse racking systems and goods vehicles at various heights including those at or close to the particular trucks maximum height capabilities.
  • Action to be taken in an emergency in particular for example, action to be taken in the event of a tip over.
  • Considerations to be taken with regard to the parking of a lift truck including the prevention of unauthorised use.
  • Theoretical assessment of 5 open and 25 multiple choice questions (can be conducted orally where language barriers or literacy difficulties exist).
  • Practical assessment of operators’ knowledge of & ability to carry out a pre-operational inspection.
  • Practical test of basic operating skills based on the various activities undertaken throughout the practical exercises.

On successful completion each candidate will receive a Certificate & Photo ID card which can be produced by Safe-T-Solutions at no extra charge, or can be produced by the relevant accrediting body and entered onto their national database (where your audit trail may require this option) at an additional cost of £19.50 + Vat per candidate.

We can arrange short assessment courses to judge the ability & training needs of experienced operators who have had little or no formal training.

On completion of the candidates profile sheet detailing any previous experience and after the initial assessment, the duration of the course can be shortened at the instructors’ discretion

An Experienced Operator is someone who:

• has 6 months minimum operating experience on the category of truck being applied for, which can be verified by the current or previous employer.

Bring your skills up to speed with this course.
The operator must have at least 6 months relevant Lift Truck operating experience but may not have evidence of previous formal training.
This course is designed to raise the operators’ awareness of the hazards and reinforce their operating ability with knowledge of the correct & safe operating practices for the category of truck they operate.

This course may also be given in cases where formally trained operators may be required to convert from one machine type to another more complicated or technically difficult.

Course Duration

Actual duration dependant on number of candidates, type of equipment and amount of corrective tuition required in preparation for assessment test. (Maximum of 3 candidates per course).

Course Content

Approx 2 ½ Hrs Classroom based Theory training to establish safety knowledge including current legislation, best practice & relevant safety films, followed by sufficient supervised practical exercises in both manoeuvring in open & confined areas & if applicable on slopes, loaded & unloaded, stacking & de-stacking a variety of loads in warehouse racking systems and / or bulk stacks, the loading & unloading of goods vehicles for developing & encouraging good operating habits & skills.

Course Certification

On successful completion of a theory test consisting of both open and multiple choice questions and a practical assessment test, successful candidates will receive a Certificate of Training in Basic Practical Skill and Ability.

On Site at Customer's premises or other nominated venue.

Staff Instructors

All Safe-T-Solutions instructors are accredited by the appropriate accrediting body and are also fully experienced, trained, tested and certificated on the relevant machines.
