Course review:

· Just met a Deaf person for the first time?

· Worried about working with Deaf people?

· Want to learn our language quickly?

· Have time to spare?

Then our Accelerated Level One BSL course is for you!
Here's what to expect:

· highly skilled trainers who use BSL as their first language

· a course that introduces you to the Deaf Community, so you can gain experience and signing skills in the right environment

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

· understand and use simple words and sentences in BSL

· take part in basic BSL conversations

· give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL

· give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL

Accelerated Level One BSL is suitable for parents, family, friends or colleagues of Deaf people and those who want to:

· acquire enough language skills to facilitate simple communication with Deaf people and/or as part of the programme of study

· progress to more advanced study and/or employment using BSL in the future

· study for personal development

Uniquely, BSLworks' course structure builds on the Signature Qualification Specification for Level One BSL (Beginners) with a skills analysis that identifies individual learning gaps. Classes are limited to 12 students to maximise one-to-one attention. Students need no prior experience of sign language to be eligible.

The course consists of three units, each of which can be achieved separately. Learners new to BSL should cover the introductory unit first, as units 102 and 103 build on this knowledge.

Unit 101 – Introduction to BSL

· Fingerspelling - names

· Basic numbers, including time and age

· Greetings

· Basic weather – describe and ask for weather

· Transport and directions

Unit 102 – Conversational BSL

· Family & animals

· Hobbies & leisure

· Using numbers – up to 100

· Food & drink

Unit 103 – BSL at School, College or Work

· Getting Around

· Exchanging information

· Weather

· Using numbers up to 1,000,000

If you pass all three assessments you will be awarded the nationally-recognised Level One Certificate in BSL, enabling you to move on to Level Two should you wish. Assessment dates will be confirmed during the course.
