Level 1 Course Accredited by Signature

It begins with raising awareness of BSL and history’s place in the lives of Deaf people, highly recommended for people who live and work with Deaf people.

Continuing into learning some everyday BSL and the opportunity to develop everyday BSL use.

At the end of the course, you will have an opportunity to undertake assessment of your skills and receive a certificate.

Details of course

This course is designed to enable learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics, involving simple everyday language, e.g.:

  • Learning how to communicate when meeting people
  • How to use the BSL numbering system for counting people and things
  • Describing and asking about the weather
  • Transport – giving and receiving information about travel
  • Learning how to give directions and how to ask for directions

The training is delivered once a week in a 2-hour block over 28 weeks. Course times vary to cover daytime, evenings and weekends, and we try to cover everyone’s requirements where possible.

  • The sessions are informal and relaxed, with a coffee break half-way through
  • The tutor will lead learners through simple exercises, games and teaching sessions
  • The tutor will teach BSL through the use of BSL (the sessions are taught in BSL)
  • Learners will be prepared for the Level 1 assessments, but the assessment is optional and students are welcome to study without participating in a qualification
