Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language

Here at the Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind People we offer the first three levels of BSL. The courses progress in complexity from Level 1 to Level 3, so no matter what stage of learning you are at we are able to cater for you!

As this is a recognised CACDP (The Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People) course, there are optional exams at the end of the course consisting of three separate units.

This course is designed to enable learners to:

  • Communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of familiar contexts, with longer and more open-ended exchanges than at Level 1.
  • Develop functional communication about a range of real life, routine, and daily experiences
  • The learner will be able to cope with most routine tasks
  • The learner will have a sufficient grasp of grammar to be able to deal with some non-routine tasks
  • The course is taught through four main themes:
    • Everyday conversation
    • Eating and Drinking
    • Spending and Shopping
    • Travel and Holidays

The course is delivered once a week in a 2½-hour block over 39 weeks. Course times vary to cover daytime, evenings and weekends, and we try to cover everyone’s requirements where possible.

  • The sessions are relaxed and informal with a coffee/tea break half-way through
  • The tutor will take care to monitor everyone’s level of BSL in order to offer appropriate support and encouragement
  • The sessions contain brief presentations from the tutor, group discussion, pair work, exercises, and role play
  • The course is run in BSL, and learners are encouraged to ‘switch off their voices’ during the sessions
  • Learners will be prepared for the Level 2 assessments, but participation in the qualification is optional.
  • Learners are encouraged to get as much exposure to BSL as possible outside the classroom

The Level 2 BSL course will enable you to:

  • Communicate with BSL users at a good ‘everyday’ level
  • Achieve a nationally recognised qualification
  • Progress to Level 3
  • Open up social, volunteering and employment opportunities
