SILVERSMITHING & JEWELLERY - MIXED ABILITIES
Entry Requirements
An interest in the subject. It is preferable but
not essential that you have already completed a previous silversmithing
and jewellery course.
Description
· To develop interest and
practical skills in the craft of silversmithing
· To understand and
develop design skills in a medium of metal working, and the peculiarities
of gold and silver
· To enable students with experience to progress
their creative skills in silversmithing
After completing this
course you should be able to:
· design and make an original piece of
silverware, or jewellery, to a hall markable standard using traditional
craft skills, and precious metals (ie gold or silver)
· to cut, shape,
solder with hand medium and easy solder, planish, block and raise a piece
to shape; finish and polish
· to create pieces, using gold, silver and
other materials, (ie gem stones, wooden handles and knobs) with
imagination and individuality
Course Content
· Introduction
to the craft - practical application and use of designs and working
drawings in a workshop environment
· Health and safety
· Use of
the torque for annealing and soldering (small hand torches sometimes used)
·
Hammer work, stone setting, cleaning, polishing and finishing
· Use of
commercial findings
· Hall marking
· Advanced design and
craftsmanship
· Items to be made by negotiation with tutor
Where
a course is aimed towards an assessment/examination, it is expected that
all students will enter for the qualification.
Method of Assessment
Tutor
observations, practical work, discussions.

Materials
Notebook and pen
Silver and gold to be purchased by
students. A £5 materials charge has been made to cover the cost of
incidental goods supplied by the tutor and this has been included in the
tuition fee.
Major items will need to be purchased by the student at an
extra cost, in some cases this could be through the tutor by a private
arrangement.
