Course Aim

This course is designed for managers and agents who are, or are about to be, responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff and workforce.

The course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.

Objectives

The course aims to help site managers, agents and supervisors to:

  • manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within the context of their management or supervisory role
  • develop an understanding of responsibilities and accountability for site health, safety and welfare, and
  • recognise a safe site is efficient, economical and productive.

At the end of the period of training, Delegates will be aware of, and able to:

  • implement all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their daily work
  • implement new guidance and industry best practice
  • state their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment.

Content of Course

The course content includes the following topics delivered over 5 days.

  • Introduction to health and safety law, duties, responsibilities, enforcement and sanctions
  • Overviews/explanations of CDM Regulations and other relevant construction regulations
  • Accidents - costs, causes, investigation, prevention and reporting systems
  • Risk assessment and risk control
  • Safety management systems, policies, plans, performance and measuring
  • Management of contractors
  • Development of ’safe systems of work’ and permit systems
  • Effective communications on site
  • Behavioural science including awareness of human error
  • Motivating good safety behaviour
  • Construction company’s duties and responsibilities
  • Responsibilities of Managers, Supervisors and Operatives
  • Planning for health and safety management on a project

Delivery of Course

The course is generally delivered over 2 days in the first week and 3 days in the second week. However, an inhouse course can be delivered over any timescale that suits the client.

Examination Information

Delegates who attend will be required to satisfactorily complete 3 course exercises throughout he course and complete a multiple choice test at the end of the course to confirm their understanding of the subjects covered.
