The refresher course is for Delegates who have previously passed the full SMSTS course or subsequent Refresher course and can provide proof of attendance. It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course includes a wide range of topics, many building on the previous five-day course programme as well as introducing new subjects. Suitable for: The course is intended for project managers, site managers, agents and site supervisors who already have an SMSTS qualification and need to undertake a refresher course.

About this course
Only those Delegates who hold an existing SMSTS or subsequent Refresher course and provided evidence to the Training Provider before attending the course are eligible to attend the refresher course. Failure to attend the refresher course prior to the expiry of an existing certificate will require Delegates to re-enter the scheme by completing the full SMSTS course if they wish to remain in the scheme. If a Delegate cannot provide a copy of their certificate, it may be possible to receive confirmation from ConstructionSkills Helpdesk on 0844 844 1315.

Course Aim
The refresher course is for Delegates who have previously passed the full SMSTS course or subsequent Refresher course and can provide proof of attendance. It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course includes a wide range of topics, many building on the previous five-day course programme as well as introducing new subjects.
Objectives
The refresher course aims to:
- Raise awareness of current trends within the Health and Safety Executive direction of enforcement.
- Improve awareness of recent development in construction, legislation and health and safety, welfare and environmental issues.
- Identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation and working practices.
At the end of the period of training, delegates will be able to:
- Be aware of, and able to implement all updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them in their role as a manager.
- Be aware of and able to implement new guidance and industry best practice affected by changes.
- Be more aware of their duties and responsibilities with regard to health, safety, welfare and the environment
Content of Course
The course comprises the delivery of a number of key topics and discussions on other key subjects over 2 days:-.
- CDM regulations
- Accident reporting, investigation, prevention and control
- Management of health on site
- Behaviour based safety
- Drugs & alcohol misuse
- Asbestos
- Lone working
- Environmental management
- Waste management
Delivery of Course
The course is generally delivered over 1 day in the first week and 1 day in the second week. However, an inhouse course can be delivered over any timescale that suits the client.
Examination Information
Delegates who attend will be required to undertake a multiple choice test to confirm their understanding of the subjects covered.
