Overview
At Able Skills we aim to prepare everyone as best we can for the industry that they are choosing to move in to. Often, this means that we need to consider what other skills an individual may need to have in order to undertake the job of their choice.

If you have never had cause to use a drill, lift a floorboard, drain down a system or hang a radiator then this course is perfect. The skills learned in these 5 days will not only stand you in good stead for once you are working as a Gas Engineer, they will help you get through your Gas Portfolio placement a lot easier also.

What You’ll Learn

For those of you who are not plumbers and who have not had experience of undertaking aspects of plumbing work, you will need to ensure that you have certain skills in order to undertake particular aspects of gas work.

Able Skills has devised a Site-Skills course to cover a variety of Gas Engineer related tasks which will prepare you well for when you are working as a registered Gas Engineer but more importantly, will prepare you for the portfolio placement that you need to undertake in order to move forward in the process associated with becoming Gas Safe registered.

The course will cover:

  • How an open vented heating and hot water system works
  • How to drain down and decommission the systems
  • How to convert open vented heating systems to a sealed heating system
  • How to mark out the position of a boiler using a boiler template
  • How to drill a hole through masonry for the boiler flue and fix a boiler jig to a masonry wall
  • How to assemble, mark out and hang radiators
  • How to lift correctly, mark out and notch floor joists
  • How to install both copper and plastic pipework under a suspended floor
  • How to fill and vent a system of air
How You’ll Learn

The work of a Gas Engineer can vary; it is not always as simple as undertaking a service or removing a boiler and replacing it with a newer version. There will be instances when appliances may be required to be re-sited, pipework will need to be run, re-sized etc. Floor boards may need to come up and drilling through masonry for the boiler flue will need to be undertaken – the list is endless.

This Gas Site-Skills course has been put together following consultation with the Gas Engineers that we use when we place our gas portfolio students. Their recommendations are based on their findings, having sometimes spent several weeks with gas students. Their comments never relate to the gas related knowledge of the students as this is always sound, more-so with other basic skills that students have not picked up because they are not plumbers or similar.

Throughout this Site-Skills course which is predominantly practical, we will endeavour to cover training in the most common aspects of gas related work so that you are completely prepared for most eventualities, providing you with the essential skills for working on pipe-work in the industry.

Courses Open To You After

Dependent upon your background you can either move straight on to the 3 week (or weekends) Gas Managed Learning Programme or if you want to learn some additional skills that will help you in the industry, we also offer a pipe-skills course as well which is incredibly popular.

Able Skills can arrange all aspects of training, portfolio and assessments for you and they are all available as packages of training or individually.

Additional Info

When you are working under supervision of a Gas Safe registered Engineer having had your 3 weeks of gas training, there will be times when you will be expected to undertake the necessary tasks to get the job done. If you learn these skills on Able Skills Site-Skills course and then utilise these skills whilst completing your gas portfolio, then you can be completely confident that once you are out there working on your own that there will not be much in the way of surprises or aspects of a gas appliance installation that you are unable to cope with.

This course is also available over 2 weekends.

If you would like to view the facilities at Able Skills, please feel free to visit us at any time. We are open 7 days every week and encourage visitors to the centre. You will not need an appointment, just turn up (08.30 – 16.30) and we will show you around.
