Course programme

Training & Skills Year one

October to December, Cranfield University. You will complete a combination of six modules that typically include:

  • EXT8016 Cost Engineering
  • EXT8008 Water and Wastewater Treatment Principles
  • EXT8009 Process Science and Engineering
  • EXT8010 Asset Management Policy and Strategy
  • EXT 8017 Risk Management and Reliability Engineering
  • EXT8012 Group Design Project

January to September Imperial College London. You will start your research project and take Transferable Skills and Educational Leadership (TSEL) modules covering:

  • financial management
  • health and safety standards
  • project management for research
  • research methods and design
Year two

You will study at least one Master's level technical module and you will continue with your research project. In year two, TSEL modules are taken at Sheffield University and typically include:

  • personal effectiveness and time management
  • knowledge transfer and research exploitation
  • business costing and risk
Year three

You will study at least one Master's level technical module and you will continue with your research project. In year 3, TSEL modules are taken at Exeter University and typically include:

  • patenting and intellectual property rights
  • negotiation and influencing skills
  • writing a case for investment

These four units across the three years contribute to the following compulsory module:

  • CEG8902 Transferrable Skills and Engineering Leadership Assessment
Year four

You will return to Newcastle for your TSEL modules, which typically include:

  • thesis and viva preparation
  • career planning and development
  • entrepreneurship and leadership skills
  • writing grant and funding bids

You will continue your research project(s) and write up your thesis in the remainder of the year.


Entry Requirements

A 2:1 honours degree and/or master's degree in:

  • environmental engineering
  • microbiology
  • related environmental and life sciences
