About this course

This course is for learners who do not have any formal qualifications, but would like to be able to apply to university to study at degree level. You will need to have a mature approach toward studying. It is desirable to have a minimum of one year's experience of voluntary, low-paid, full-time or part-time paid work in the care sector.

What will I learn?
This course equips the student with the skills and knowledge required to progress to a higher education course in the field of social work or a related subject. The course includes subject matter that focues on psychology, social policy, social work practice and sociology. Sociology: The sociology of Crime and Deviance; The sociology of the family; Sociology, Culture & Identity; Social Class; Sociology of Poverty and the Welfare State. Psychology: Introduction to Psychology; Child Development; Perspectives in Psychology; controversial issues in psychology; Individual Differences: Abnormality. The course also provides the skills that strengthen students' study skills. These skills focus on the writing of essays and reports; note taking; presentations and seminar based group and individual work. A social work or other related degree course. You could gain employment in a range of careers e.g. within the caring professions, education, health and social care.

How will I be taught?
Study skills fully integrated throughout the delivery of the subject topics! Subject based activities include: experiments, classroom work; workshops; lecturer presentations; debate forums.

How will I be assessed?
Our students will be assessed though the use of essays, reports, presentations (witness statements), projects.

What could I do next?
You could progress to a social work or other related degree course. You could gain employment in a range of careers e.g. within the caring professions, education, health and social care.

How would this benefit my employer?
This course is primarily designed for our students who will attend university to follow a course of study. At CONEL we will equip our students with the necessary transferable skills that will benefit potential employers such as: word-processing; spreadsheet (input and analysis) accuracy of language, grammar and general report and writing skills.
