The programme, over the three years, is themed in the following ways: FOUNDATIONS OF SOCIAL WORK, EXPLORATIONS IN SOCIAL WORK and ADVANCED STUDIES IN SOCIAL WORK.

Level 1

You will study Social policy, Sociology and Social Work practice. This will include the study of values and ethics; skills, the knowledge and legislative bases for intervention; the nature of service user involvement and the relevance of Human growth and development over the life course.

Level 2

You will study Social Work law, Research and Critical thinking and Social Work theory and methods.

Level 3

You will study Contemporary issues in Social Work practice, Professionalism, Partnership and Empowerment in Social Work. Further you will participate in Advanced Seminars where the content will be directed by specific research interests of the programme team. As students you will then have the opportunity to take your own ideas forward in the production of research papers and posters.

At each level of the course, you will also undertake practice placements. The placement duration currently is 30 days in the first year for preparation for practice (Readiness to Practice), 70 days in the second year and 100 days in final year. Currently, the placements in the last two years of the programme begin in January and May, respectively.

The programme content is delivered through lectures, seminars and small group tutorials. You will also be required to attend departmental research seminars during the academic period in the university, and recall days during practice learning placements.

We use a variety of methods to assess your learning; reflecting on the fact that we all learn in different ways. These include some written examinations, essays, reports, short papers, project work, individual and group presentations and a ‘practice dissertation’ in your final year. All the placements are assessed using a portfolio of gathered evidence. In all your assessments we require you as developing social workers to demonstrate the relevance of anti-oppressive practice and social justice in the practice of Social Work and social care.

You may also be interested in...

Law

Law LLB

Psychology

Social Policy

Sociology
