If you are an adult who is planning to progress to higher education to undertake a degree programme, but currently does not have the necessary qualifications, then the Access to HE Diploma Social Work and Related Professions has been designed for you. This is an academic course which will help mature students who may lack the educational background to update their academic skills and knowledge.

About this course




The course may enable progression onto degrees in related subjects, such as Psychology, Sociology, Social policy or Anthropology.

You will be able to apply to progress onto a higher education course in Social Work or related subjects. You will need to achieve a minimum of 30 of the level 3 credits at Merit or Distinction to meet entry requirements for the Social Work degree.


GCSE English and maths at grade C or above, a high standard of literacy will be required to successfully achieve the Diploma, so you will undertake a literacy assessment and written essay test to ascertain whether this course is appropriate for you. An interview will also take place.

Course programme

In order to achieve the Access Diploma, you will have to achieve 60 credits; 45 of which are at level 3.

Optional subject units include:

  • Social Work skills
  • Making sense of Social Work
  • The role of the Social Worker

Course Assessment Method

Teachers will invite you to join in group discussions. Your classwork will involve you learning by speaking to others, watching videos, reading books and researching on the computer. You will be expected to complete additional research assignments in your own time.

Mandatory core skills units include:

  • Preparing for HE
  • Academic skills/study skills/literacy skills
  • Examination skills.

Mandatory subject units include:

  • Meeting the needs of different client groups
  • Principles of care
  • Health & Social care values.
