Course overview

A new and exciting cross Stockport initiative for September 2009, the Diploma course has been designed with input from employers, schools, colleges and universities to help develop your knowledge and skills of working in a variety of care settings or progression to HE.

It is a 3.5 A Level course that includes covering specific units, another A level plus an extended project.

Throughout the course you will have an opportunity to apply the knowledge you have acquired in a practical and realistic way by gaining experience in the community, participating in class discussions and sharing your own experience. Visiting speakers will be integral to the Diploma.

Principal Learning

There are 6 mandatory units which need to be completed as well as an extended project.

Units covered will include:

Communicating and information sharing

Safeguarding and protecting individuals and society

Partnership working

Additional Specialist Learning

In order to complete the Diploma you will complement your programme of study with another A level. This can help to provide a pathway into areas such as community justice, health, social work or education.

Special entry requirements

It is likely to be suitable for students with 5 GCSEs including Maths and English, grade C or above.

How you will learn

Throughout the course you will develop your personal learning and thinking skills by using a variety of experiences both in the classroom and from work experience. In class you will take part in group discussions, role play and presentations. Independent study will be an important feature of this programme.

How you will be assessed

You will produce coursework assignments throughout the course with two examined assignments as part of your principal learning.

In addition, you will complete an extended project on a topic of your choice, related to an area of interest, and which could be linked to your other A Level subject or your Diploma.

Other complementary subjects

Any other A Level subject could be taken to help provide a pathway into areas such as health, social work, community justice or young people and education. Functional skills in English, Maths and IT are also key to this programme.

What you can do after this course

The Diploma has been designed to help you explore the many different sectors and help will be available to ensure you make informed choices about the right employment, vocational training or HE options.

What the students say

I cant wait to do work experience. Im spending two weeks with the probation service. I like the idea of working in community justice and trying to help young people that have got themselves into trouble. Making a difference is something I find really rewarding, so this part of the Diploma will be fun and Ill learn a lot.
I already know a bit about working with nursery children from previous school work. I think Im going to do my project on how three year olds use outdoor equipment and space. I want to use the findings to plan an adventure playground suitable for that age group.
