This Sociology course runs in 2016/17.

How do societies develop and why are they so often characterised by inequality? Can we ever achieve an equal society? In what ways do social structures limit or determine individual action? This course seeks to understand and answer these complex issues as they relate to modern British society and beyond.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Sociology at Coventry is a lively discipline linking classical and contemporary theory to consider current social issues, and can provide you with relevant expertise for employment in a range of fields in today’s global society.

As well as gaining a thorough grounding in social theory and research methodology, you will develop an understanding of the most important issues of our times, learning how to analyse and understand the society we live in. You will think critically about the changes and challenges of everyday social life.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • links with national and local employers including the Refugee Centre and Citizens Advice Bureau;
  • placement opportunities with local authorities and community, health and welfare settings
    (subject to application);
  • talks from guest speakers, events and conferences featuring national and international politicians and dignitaries;
  • access to an experienced, open and friendly team of lecturers who employ a wide variety of teaching methods and are actively engaged in research which they bring into their teaching;
  • an international curriculum and the options of an overseas field trip, study abroad or an overseas placement;
  • activities and events set up by the History, International Relations, Politics and Sociology Society (HIPSOC), a society created and run by the students of the School of Humanities.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect current social issues, debates and new developments in the social sciences.

In your first year you will develop a general understanding of sociology, examining concepts of society, social issues, theory and policy.

In your second year you will broaden your understanding of social theory and social phenomena, acquire social research training and further specialise in specific subject areas of your choice such as gender, race and ethnicity or social class. You then have the option of a year abroad or a placement.

Your final year will allow you to strengthen your knowledge on core topics and complete a dissertation in your own area of expertise and interest.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, online discussions as well as web-based and multimedia activities. There are opportunities to take part in debates, attend talks with invited guest speakers and join an overseas field trip. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.
