SOCIOLOGY

Why should I come to Pendleton College?
The Sociology department has an outstanding record of success. The subject offers students the opportunity to study the world around them, engaging in topics which influence their everyday life. Sociology is an excellent choice to partner a number of other AS/A-Levels but also stands alone as a credible and popular subject to be taken at university.

What will I study?
The main emphasis of the course is to develop a number of skills e.g. interpretation and evaluation, which will then encourage students to apply a sociological perspective to real-life situations. Year one (AS):
Sociology of the Family / Culture and IdentitySociology of Education and Research Methods
Year two (A2):
  • Sociology of Beliefs
  • Sociology of Crime and Deviance with Research Methods

What will I achieve?
Qualifications in Sociology allow students to progress to Higher Education for degree courses in a wide range of related fields. Alternatively, they give access to numerous career paths, particularly those involving working with people i.e. management, social work, teaching, the leisure industry, nursing, civil service, law, police, journalism and advertising. More than anything else, Sociology students develop critical and analytical skills, which can be of great value to them in both interpersonal relationships and organisational situations.

How is the course assessed?
In both AS and the A2 years, January and May/June modular exams are taken.

What else will I do?
Students benefit from close links with local universities including attending conferences and workshops at the University of Manchester, Salford and Manchester Metropolitan University. Students also have the opportunity to attend residential trips in London and Rome and guest speakers have included the police, criminologists and university lecturers.
