At AS Level, students studying this subject will acquire knowledge of contemporary social processes and social change. Students are encouraged to develop their own sociological awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world.

The AS has two units which are assessed by two examinations at the end of the year:

Unit 1 (SCLY1) - Families and Households
In this Unit, we will study the following:
  • The relationship of the family to the social structure and social change
  • Changing patterns of marriage, cohabitation, separation, divorce, childbearing, and the life course
  • The diversity of families and households today
  • The nature and extent of changes in the family
  • The nature of childhood, and changes in the status of children
  • Reasons for changes in birth rates, death rates, and family size

Unit 2 (SCLY2) - Education
In this Unit, we will study the following:
  • The role and purpose of education
  • Differences in educational achievement by social class, gender and ethnicity
  • Relationships and processes within school
  • The significances of educational policies on the structure, role and impact of education
  • The application of research methods to the study of education

Unit 2 (SCLY2) continued - Sociological Methods
In this part of the Unit we will examine:
  • Qualitative and quantitative methods of research; the strengths and limits of research design
  • The advantages and disadvantages of sources of data including questionnaires, interviews, participant and non-participant observation, experiments, documents, and official statistics
  • The distinction between primary and secondary data
  • The relationship between positivism, interpretivism and sociological methods; the nature of 'social facts'
  • Consideration influencing the conduct of research
A2
At A Level, students will continue to focus on contemporary society but they should demonstrate a wider range and greater depth of knowledge and understanding as well as more highly developed evaluation skills.

Units 3 - Beliefs in Society
This includes looking at:
  • The relationship between beliefs, social change and stability
  • Religious organisation and their relationship to beliefs and practices
  • Different groups in society and their different beliefs and practices
  • The significance of religion and spirituality in contemporary, global society

Unit 4 - Crime and Deviance
In this unit we look at:
  • Different theories of crime, deviance, social order and control
  • Patterns and trends in crime and deviance in relation to gender, ethnicity and social class
  • Crime and deviance in a global and contemporary society
  • Crime control, prevention and punishment
  • The sociological study of suicide
  • The connections between theory and methods in the study of deviance

Unit 4 continued - Sociological Methods
  • This part of the unit will cover similar areas to the AS unit on Methods but in greater depth and breadth.
