What are the main features of this course?
Sociologists aim to investigate and understand the society and human behaviour within it. It is concerned with groups of people - small groups, like families or larger groups such as ethnic groups or people of the same 'gender'.
In one year, the GCSE course tries to cover a wide spread of such questions. Students also investigate one thing themselves. In recent years, investigations have included 'Why do girls and boys choose different subjects?', 'What are the effects of unemployment?', 'Is there racism in the police force?' and 'Is marriage still popular?'.

Hours of Lessons per Week : 3.7 Indicative Group Size : 15

How is the course assessed?
We follow the AQA syllabus which includes an investigation or project worth 20% of the total marks. Students also take either the Higher or Foundation examination, both of which can lead to a grade C. The Higher also can lead to a grade A* - B.

Who should study this course?
You need to fulfil the College entry requirements for taking GCSE courses. You should also have at least a grade D in English, since you will have to do a fair amount of reading and writing.

Where can I go next?
GCSE courses may lead you on to higher level courses such as GCE or VCE A level. Sociology is also useful for jobs in areas such as social work, nursing, administration or police work.
