This course will appeal to those interested in human behaviour and the critical study of society.
What does the course involve?
Sociology provides many very different perspectives on the world, criticising old, established ideas and generating new ones. Sociology addresses the most challenging issues of our time; it is a fast-growing field whose potential is increasingly exploited by those creating programmes to solve social problems. An interest in society is preferred, but if you have an open mind then you will enjoy the opportunity to consider social issues from many perspectives. You will develop your research skills as well as your ability to answer essay and structured questions while on the course. Examinations take place in May; coursework is not offered as an option.
What will I study?
G671: Exploring Socialisation, Culture and Identity - 50% of the AS grade: including research methods and gender and identity.G672: Topics in Socialisation, Culture and Identity - 50% of the AS grade: unit covered is on the familiy.

Do I need to take A level Sociology to study Sociology at degree level?
No, all that is required is 3 academic A levels to gain entry on to any Sociology degree, although many students find it beneficial to take the subject at this level. Many find that it is the study of Sociology at AS/A level which inspires them to take it further and allows them to have sufficient insight to decide whether a career related to Sociology might be suitable for them.
Is there any coursework?
No, each unit is assessed by an examination at the end of the course.
Is it possible to re-sit units?
Yes, re-sits are available to improve grades either in January or in the following June.
Do I have to pass AS Sociology in order to take A2 Sociology?
Yes, a minimum of a 'D' grade is required at AS in order to progress to A2.
