About the Course
At AS Level you will study four from the following subjects - family life, religion, youth culture, mass media, education, community and culture. You will also examine research methods used in Sociology. Studying these subjects will raise such questions as:
* Why are women choosing not to have children?
* What explains domestic violence?
* How come people born in Southampton live seven years longer than those born in Manchester?
* Who prays now?
* Who joins cults, and are they all sad?
* Proud to be Muslim?
* How accurate is the portrayal of young people on TV?
* What†s wrong with being a chav?
* Computer games - saddo or cool?
* Why do people join gangs?
At A2 Level you will study crime and deviance, poverty and social inequality. You will study some of the fundamental inequalities or injustices in modern society, You will evaluate the differing theories that attempt to explain the impact of class, ethnicity, colour, disability and gender on people†s chances of enjoying a good life. Is life about luck or choice or are your chances determined by your birth?

AS Level involves two written examinations:
Unit 1 - Acquiring Culture.
Unit 2 - Understanding Culture.
A2 Level also involves two written examinations:
Unit 3 - Understanding Power and Inequality.
Unit 4 - Understanding Power and Social Division.
Fees
No Course Fees for Under 19's. Over 19's must pay, or claim Level 2 or Level 3 Entitlement for FREE courses .

Sociology is fully accepted as an entry qualification by every institution of higher education. It is also regarded as a valuable preparation for many careers, especially the social services, police, nursing, teaching, journalism and sports management.
