SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEMS
The participants will join students on modules of CAT's MSc Renewable Energy and the Built Environment and will gain a comprehensive overview of the subject in theoretical and workshop sessions.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Breakfast each day is at 0830, lunch at 1300 and supper at 1800. Tea and coffee breaks are also provided.
Main Topics of Study:
· Solar resource, geometry and theory.
· Collectors and systems.
· Large scale systems.
· System modelling.
· Design standards and regulations.
· Roofs, mounting and installation.
· Ground source heat pumps.
Lectures:
· Solar resource: measuring techniques, solar geometry, shading, sun path diagrams.
· Theory of solar collectors and heat storage.
· Types of solar collectors and different system approaches, system and sizing, control strategies.
· Solar system design: estimation of annual performance, an over view of models available and evaluation of performance.
· Calculation of roofing loads: mounting techniques good practice.
· Introduction to ground source heat pumps: evaluation of types design consideration, impacts, benefits and performance case studies.
Practicals:
· Sun path diagrams, solar collector efficiency, tour of solar thermal plant.
· Solar thermal design exercise, heat pump design exercise.
COURSE TUTORS
This course is developed and taught by lecturers from the Graduate School of the Environment.
