The Certificate in Practical Languages is a one year course aimed at allowing you to cope in a business environment. For beginners and those with basic knowledge the course will involve preparing for the Entry Level. Those of you who already have GCSE will prepare in a different class for level 1. In both courses you will learn how to deal with customers and visitors over the phone and face.

About the subject
The Certificate in Practical Languages is a one year course aimed at allowing you to cope in a business environment. For beginners and those with basic knowledge the course will involve preparing for the Entry Level. Those of you who already have GCSE will prepare in a different class for level 1.
In both courses you will learn how to deal with customers and visitors over the phone and face to face. You will make travel/hotel arrangements, give information about products/prices, deal with correspondence, forms and publicity material. You will need to respond to messages left on the answer phone, and cope with announcements at airports and railway stations. You will learn to write short memos and faxes.
Learning Styles
Oral exercises, including work over the telephone. Listening to taped announcements and answer phone messages. Revising/introducing basic grammar.

Practical way of maintaining language skills between GCSE and HE if not taking AS in a language
Subject modules and assessment
All external examiner assessed. All elements pass/fail. Partial or full certificate awarded indicating elements passed.
Entry Level: Eight Elements - 1. Dealing with visitors. 2. Arriving at a hotel. 3. Dealing with directions and signs. 4. Travelling on business
Survival Level: Five Elements - 1. Listening to spoken Spanish.
2. Reading four documents. 3. Conversing socially. 4. Use of telephone.
5. Writing a brief message, short letter and memo (optional).
Threshold Level: Six Elements - 1. Listening for basic factual information.
2. Reading adverts, signs simple articles, work-place letters and reports.
3. Use of Telephone.
4. Exchanging opinions based on simple stimulus material.
5. Conversing formally with a visitor, welcoming and explaining programme of visit.
6. Writing a brief message, short letter, memo.
