Spanish

Introduction

After English, Spanish is the most widely spoken of the world's European languages and is the second language of the USA. Staff in the Department of Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Studies pursue research in a diverse range of topics. This is reflected in a teaching programme which builds on many aspects of f the history, literature and culture of Iberia and Latin America, from medieval times to the present day. We have a number of well-established exchange links with universities in Spain and Portugal, as well as with several universities in Latin America, giving the department a very cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Assessment
Assessment in year one and language assessment in year two are for progression purposes only and do not contribute to the final degree. All other work carried out in year two and all the work from year four contributes to the final degree. Assessment is by means of seminar and oral language presentations, essays, translation work, dissertations and examinations.
