This single honours course allows you to include a substantial proportion of study in Spanish. Spanish is the major subject which counts for two thirds of your degree, and Chinese is the minor subject which counts for the remaining third.

About this course


The course aims to enable understudies to: be able to produce sentences and short paragraphs using basic vocabulary and grammatical constructions.

be able to communicate in Chinese on basic everyday issues.

be able to understand the essential features of Chinese sentence structures;

be familiar with the pronunciation and tones;

be able to recognise and write basic characters, and read simple prose passages


Studying Modern Languages opens the door to a wide variety of careers. Many Bangor Modern Languages graduates have, of course, gone into teaching and translating, but just as many have embarked upon successful careers in the civil service, business and commerce, industry and the media. The skills you learn whilst studying languages – cultural awareness, communication, accuracy, planning and logical analysis – are valued highly by employers from all sectors of the economy.

260 240 points, normally including a foreign language at A2 level.
We consider mature students on individual merit.
These degrees are aimed at students who have not already studied A level Chinese (or equivalent), but will be suitable for students who have a GCSE (or equivalent) in Chinese.

Course programme

What will you study on this course? By studying Chinese you will follow language modules that will build over the years to provide both breadth and depth of understanding geared towards helping students to develop linguistic, analytical and communication skills by both working with others and individually. For the Chinese component of your degree, in Year 1 you will take the two compulsory modules Chinese for Beginners 1 and 2. In Year 2, you will take the compulsory module Chinese Language Skills. Year 3 will be spent abroad. At least one semester will be spent studying at one of our partner universities in China. In your final year, you will study the compulsory module Advanced Chinese Language Skills, in addition to choosing one optional 10 credit module from a list including: Press Dossier or Approaching Translation.
