This course strives to equip learners with a greater knowledge and understanding of a range of aspects regarding Special Educational Needs (SEN). This is the ideal programme for individuals working within an educational setting. How is this course Structured? The Level 3 Special Educational Needs course is divided into six comprehensive modules.

Module 1 – Special Educational Needs (SEN) Overview

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss what is meant by Special Educational Needs
  • Explain what is meant by the terms Early Years Action/School Action, Early Years Action Plus/School Action Plus and Statemented and begin to show awareness of the new Code of Practice
  • Discuss general data, facts and figures related to SEN and historical aspects
  • Outline some common tests and explain their purposes and how they are used to help children
  • Discuss EAL in relation to SEN
Module 2 – SEN Provision in Schools and Policies

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss the main points of the SEN Code of Practice and show a good awareness of the main changes
  • Show awareness of the Disability and Equality Acts, the Children and Families Act and understand the implication for schools
  • Discuss Child Protection within school settings
  • Discuss the differences between special schools and mainstream schools and parental choice
Module 3 – SENCo Role and Outside Agencies

Learning Outcomes:

  • Briefly outline how the role of the SENCo has evolved
  • Discuss the role of the SENCo
  • Discuss common outside agencies involved with schools.
Module 4 – Some Common SEN Conditions Found in Schools

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss some of the common SEN conditions found in mainstream and special schools
  • Discuss the four broad areas of need and explain which conditions generally fall under these areas
  • Outline the common SEN conditions and consider the main traits/symptoms whilst bearing in mind that each difficulty covers a wide range from low to high severity
  • Outline traits common to all of the common SEN
  • Outline how diagnosis is made and the difficulties of attaining a diagnosis.
Module 5 – Behaviour

Learning Outcomes:

  • Outline behavioural issues and ways to deal with challenging behaviour and how to promote positive behaviour
  • Discuss how relationships work and ways forward to build rapport
  • Discuss the importance of preparing a child for transition.
Module 6 – Inclusive Education

Learning Outcomes:

  • Outline behavioural issues and ways to deal with challenging behaviour and how to promote positive behaviour
  • Discuss how relationships work and ways forward to build rapport
  • Discuss the importance of preparing a child for transition.

Course Assessments

The Special Educational Needs course is marked through a process of continuous assessment guided by your tutor following standard guidelines. This means that your certificate of achievement will be awarded according to your performance on assessments rather than by taking an exam.

Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, a certificate of achievement will be awarded by ABC Awards, as confirmation that your written work has met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the programme.
