This course provides students with a general intro to deafness. Developed to provide information & strategies that enable those that can hear to understand of range of issues faced by those with a hearing disability.

About this course

This home study course provides learners with awareness skills that when applied will help reduce the barriers arising with communication difficulties between those who can hear and those with a hearing disability.

Aimed at anyone working within a social or care setting or those with a general interest in this subject.

Students looking to enrol onto this course should meet the following criteria:
Be aged 16 Years or above
Possess a solid knowledge of the english language Recommended GCSE Grade C Min
Have access to a PC and the internet for the duration of the whole course
Basic computer skills: e.g Word processing, emailing, uploading documents etc
Have a genuine desire to succeed

Module 1 - Perceptions of deafness : what is deafness

Understand the terminology used to describe different types and levels of deafness
Recognise terminology that is no longer acceptable
Identify potential clues that may indicate a hearing loss

Module 2 - Communicating with lip readers

Be aware of the difficulties for lip readers caused by the speaker and the construction of the English language
Differentiate between words and letters that are visible and those that are not visible
Identify the four visible letters groups and recognise words and letters that look the same
Determine the considerations needed when selecting an appropriate room/area for a meeting with a lip reader
Understand the strategies to employ when speaking to a lip reader

Module 3 - Comminicating with deaf sign language users

Be aware of the sign language systems used in the education of deaf children
Determine the distinctions between the sign language systems and British sign language (BSL)
Recognise the grammatical and syntactical differences between BSL and English
Be aware of how the differences between BSL and English language impact on a deaf signers use of language
Identify the advantages and disadvantages of English text
Understand the strategies to employ when speaking to deaf BSL users

Module 4 - Assistive Aids

Be aware of the range of assistive aids available
Match suitable assistance aids to the type of deafness
Match appropriate equipment to a range of situations
Identify where to source assistance equipment from

Module 5 - Communication Professionals

Distinguish the role of different communication professionals
Be aware of considerations needed when using a communication professional
Understand how to find and book a communication professional

Module 6 - Deaf community & culture

Identify elements that distinguish deaf community members
Understand how deaf culture differs from hearing culture
Recognise the role of deaf clubs and centres
Beware of the use of capital D to represent people with a deaf culture and identity

Module 7 - Legislation

Understand the elements of the equality act and how it relates to deaf issues
Be aware of elements of the human rights act that can be related to deaf issues
Recognise the limitations of the legislation available

Module 8 - Organisations Support people with hearing loss

Be aware of the main organisations concerned with deafness
Compare the role of national and local organisations
Identify advantages and disadvantages in the role of national and local organisations
Be able to contact organisations to seek further information if required

Additional information

Students have a maximum of one year to complete. Course duration approx. 100 hours.
