The aim of this programme is to develop your knowledge and experience of science both in terms of its theory and practical relation to sport and exercise. It focuses on how exercise affects the athlete and sports person with a view to optimising performance. The course has strong science influences, whilst incorporating practical activities to underpin theoretical knowledge.

What modules are covered?

Year 1

Anatomy for Sport and Exercise
This unit explores the structure and function of the skeletal system, the muscular system, the cardiovascular system and the respiratory system. Nervous control of the muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems is also investigated.

Sport and Exercise Physiology
This unit commences by exploring the responses of the cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems to the anticipation and initials stress of exercise. Learners will then explore the response of the body when a steady state has been achieved. The mechanisms of fatigue are examined, along with recovery from sports and exercise. To complete the unit, ways in which the body adapts to repeated bouts of exercise is studied; both aerobic and anaerobic adaptations are covered.

Sport and Exercise Psychology
This unit applies a scientific approach to the study of people and their behaviour in sporting environments, and explores the application of knowledge gained through that study. This unit gives a sound theoretical base, understanding personality, motivational factors, stress, arousal, anxiety and the effect the sporting environment can have on the individual.

Research Project in Sport and Exercise Sciences
This unit follows a simple “plan, do, review” format with the focus on the development of a range of skills within the research process. Learners are encouraged to use relevant ICT skills, to identify and use a range of resources, to carry out practical investigation work effectively, to collect and analyse data, and to produce a full research report.

Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Sciences
Learners will start this unit by looking at the key issues in research methods. From this base, learners will progress to acquiring key skills in both qualitative and quantitative research. Application of data collection and data analysis techniques to practical situations are also explored in a number of laboratory and field-based settings.

Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
Learners will acquire the skills and knowledge to safety and effectively select fitness tests, carry them out and give feedback to an individual. This unit is particularly relevant for those who aspire to work in sports coaching, fitness instructing and elite sport.

Exercise, Health and Lifestyle
The first part of the unit introduces the importance of lifestyle in the maintenance of health and well being. Examination of physical activity, alcohol, smoking, diet and stress forms part of this study. Learners will then assess the lifestyle of an individual from their own research and provide advice on how to improve lifestyle and plan a health related physical activity programme.

Training and Fitness for Sport
The aim of this unit is to give learners the skills and knowledge to plan a fitness training programme and to monitor and evaluate it. A training diary has to be kept that records training carried out and logs achievements.

Practical Team Sports
This unit aims to develop the learners’ own practical sports performance in team sports, focusing on the application of skills, techniques and tactics. This is achieved through participation in practical activities, and reflection on their performances and those of other performers.

Year 2

Sports Biomechanics in Action
Biomechanics is the study of the mechanics of life forms. Human biomechanics is a science examining the forces acting upon and within a body, and the effects produced by these forces. It also applies physics and mechanics principles to the human body during sport.

Laboratory & Experimental Methods in Sport & Exercise Sciences
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to explore standard procedures in kinanthropometry and to increase familiarity with laboratory and experimental methods.

Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology
The aim and purpose of this unit is for learners to explore a range of factors including temperature, altitude, age, gender, race and ergogenic aids and their effects on sports performance.

Sports Coaching
There has never been a more exciting time for sport and coaching in the UK. This unit allows the learner to develop their own knowledge of coaching by investigating the work of recognised successful coaches. It also allows for a practical setting, as the learner can plan, deliver and evaluate their own coaching performance.

Sports Injuries
This unit concentrates initially on the importance of injury prevention, and looks at the main factors that can lead to injuries occurring, or to a performer being predisposed to suffering an injury. Learners also learn how to apply methods of treating sports injuries and are able to plan and construct treatment and rehabilitation programmes for common sports injuries.

Sport and Exercise Massage
This unit combines theory and practical knowledge necessary for learners to study sport and exercise massage. It is designed to encourage learners to use anatomical terminology and to be able to apply the knowledge in order to perform a safe and effective sport and exercise massage treatment, which may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.

Sports Nutrition
This unit aims to provide learners with a broad understanding of the key nutritional issues, where diet can be adjusted to meeting individual sports performer’s needs, and the energy requirements for a range of activities. It also enables the learner to produce a dietary plan for a sports performer in an identified sport.

Analysis of Sports Performance
In this unit, you will be able to understand the performance profile of a sporting activity and be able to analyse sporting performance.  Furthermore you will be able to provide feedback to a range of athletes and understand the different styles of analysis required for different types of levels i.e. a school child in a PE lesson to an Olympic athlete.

 Instructing Physical Activities
The aim of this unit is for learners to be able to design, plan, deliver and review exercise sessions which meet the needs of different client groups.
