This new course is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge for a career in coaching within the sport and fitness industry. Sports coaching and training is an integral part of ensuring people enjoy physical activity and sport to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.Having the skills to lead and train individuals is the key starting point to ensuring people stay fit and healthy and use physical activity as a vehicle to maintain excellent health and well-being.Therefore having a thorough understanding of how to train and coach individuals in an ever-changing environment is the key to success for any sport and fitness coach.

During the first year of the course you will study the key principles surrounding sports coaching, fitness, health and the human body. You will gain scientific and practical understanding of anatomy and physiology, fitness testing and psychology.Within the first year of study you will also undertake an 'Academic Study Skills and Entrepreneurial Thinking' unit, which will develop your academic and research skills.

In the second year you will examine how the coaching can be practised in an exciting and innovative way and you will look at how to lead sessions for a diverse range of individuals. You will also examine ways to analyse sports performance, as well as examining current issues that impact upon the sport and fitness industry. In year two you will also undertake a work-based project, which will allow you to apply key theory you have learned throughout the course. This then gives you the opportunity to advance your research skills, as well as key transferable and entrepreneurial skills.
