This BTEC First Diploma in Sport course enables you to explore and research the sports industry. Throughout the year you will take a work-related and practical look at the world of sport.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
All students are required to take the following two core units:

·The Body in Sport
- this unit explores the foundations of anatomy and physiology. You will learn the structure of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The short and long term effects of exercise of these systems are also investigated.

·Health, Safety and Injury
- in this unit you will investigate the occurrence of common sporting injuries and how best to prevent them. You will also look into safe practice when taking part in sporting activity.

Students are then required to complete four specialist units which are likely to be:

·Sport Leadership Skills -
in this mainly practical unit you will examine the skills and qualities required to plan, lead and evaluate a sporting session.

·Preparation for Sport
- in this unit you will explore the levels of fitness required in selected sports, plan a fitness training programme and consider the psychological factors that affect sports performance.

·Instructing Exercise and Fitness -
you will learn the principles behind exercise programmes and gain relevant knowledge and practical skills in exercise and fitness instruction.

·Practical Sport -
in this practical unit you will take part in a number of activities. You will eventually focus on two sports where you will look to improve your performance. You will also study the roles and responsibilities of the officials who conduct those sports.

HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
For the majority of the units you will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence. This may be in the form of written assignments, presentations or lessons that you lead. This work will first be marked by your subject teacher and then moderated by the exam board.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
You will experience a wide variety of teaching styles and activities during lessons. Amongst other things you will be involved in group work, discussions, presentations, practical activities as well as individual written work.

WHAT CAN I TAKE ALONGSIDE THE FIRST DIPLOMA?
Students can take additional one year courses such as a GCSE or an AS level.

AND AFTER THE COURSE?
You may wish to continue your studies with an AS in Physical Education, Leisure Studies or a BTEC National Diploma in Sport.
