WHY JOIN A SPORT DEVELOPMENT CENTRE?
Priestley's Sport Development Centres have been organised to establish a high level of performance and understanding in a variety of sports. The aim is to provide performers with the opportunity to develop personal performance by either coaching or competing in the Northwest Colleges league, British Colleges' competitions and in various local and national cup competitions. Performers have been selected to represent the county, region and country from performing in these Development Centres. Priestley are currently North West Champions in basketball and football.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
The majority of lessons are taught in a practical manner allowing individuals to learn from 'doing' rather than simply listening. Performers will represent the College in home and away fixtures and as such will be ambassadors for the team, the Sports Area and the College. During the course, experience will be gained in; latest training techniques, skills and drills, match planning and preparation, tactics, methods of analysis, fitness testing, devising effective training programmes, rehabilitation, fair play and coaching.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
You will develop a range of new skills. We aim to help performers reach their full potential, both academically and in their chosen sport. Opportunities will arise whereby performers will be working both independently, as part of a team, as a coach and as a referee. Through these experiences, they will acquire knowledge and understanding of elite sports coaching and performance. Preparation for competition is a major aspect of the course, in addition to developing sports specific skills and techniques.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Continual assessment of performance during training and matches will form the basis of selection onto each team. In addition academic progress will be continually monitored so as to maintain the high standards of the area.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
Sport Development Centre performers will be rewarded for their hard work and efforts by being selected for events such as coaching courses, college, county and national representation, as well as coaching in the community. Being selected to participate in the Sport Development Centres programme is highly prestigious and the skills gained are highly valued by outside clubs and organisations. Additionally employees and universities will also recognise the fact you have participated in the scheme. While participating on the course you may be invited to gain National Governing Body qualifications.
