Year 1

Principles of Anatomy & Physiology of Fitness
This unit provides the knowledge and understanding of how the body responds and adapts to exercise. It identifies the structure of the skeletal and muscular systems, applies movement analysis and studies the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Assessing Risk in Sport
You will learn all aspects of Health & Safety and their relevance in the working environment of sport. You will study the importance of legislation and how it should be used to provide a safe environment in which to work, learn and participate in sport and exercise.

Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise
Here you study the importance and purpose of health related fitness, investigate the fitness requirements for three contrasting sports and prepare and conduct appropriate fitness tests. A large part of this unit involves practical work and students are expected to select suitable fitness tests for two clients based on their individual needs.

Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport
In this unit, learners will look at the technical skills and tactics demanded by selected sports. This will lead to looking at individual performers and their abilities in the areas that their sports demand. Learners will then consider their own abilities, in competitive situations over a period of time and produce a plan to help optimise performance.

Psychology for Sport Performance
In this unit you will investigate the role of personality and motivation in sports performance and the importance of teamwork in sporting situations.  Here you will also examine the effects of stress and anxiety on sports performance and discuss a range of strategies to enhance performance.

The Athlete’s Lifestyle
This unit examines aspects of the athlete’s lifestyles, as well as duties that they will have to undertake as part of their professional role in sport, for example public appearances and media interviews.

Fitness Training and Programming
This examines the principles of training and their application to the design of training programmes. You will also investigate the various methods of fitness training and design an effective fitness training programme. Finally, you will investigate the long-term adaptations of the body to fitness training.

Practical Team Sport
You will participate in a variety of team sports offered as part of the centre’s curriculum, as well as other sports offered in the wider community.  It is expected that you will provide the evidence for this unit by selecting two sports in which you either excel or have a particular interest.

Sports Coaching
The students will investigate the roles, skills, techniques and responsibilities of successful sports coaches as well as explore the techniques involved in improving the performance of selected athletes. They also learn to plan and lead effective coaching sessions.

Year 2

Profiling Sports Performance
This unit enables the learner to explore the role and function of performance profiling in sport and the application of profiling to the design, monitoring and evaluation of a sports performance action plan.

In this unit, you will be able to understand the performance profile of a sporting activity and be able to analyse sporting performance. Furthermore you will be able to provide feedback to a range of athletes and understand the different styles of analysis required for different types of levels i.e. a school child in a PE lesson to an Olympic athlete.

Talent Identification and Development in Sport
The purpose of this unit is to give learners an understanding of the different predictors of talent and the ways of developing talent. This enables learners to devise programmes for the identification and the development talent. This enables learners to devise programmes for the identification and development of talent in different sports.
