This course runs in 2016/17.
This course teaches you the key approaches to the study of human thoughts, feelings and behaviours and how sport and exercise psychologists maximise the likelihood of consistent optimal performance in physical activity.
On this course you will complete modules delivered by both Psychology and Sports Science lecturers. However your focus will be on how the two areas are related to each other and how the principles of each discipline are combined in the work of sport psychologists.

- guest lectures by experts from outside of the School including practising psychologists and researchers in psychology who ensure you are exposed to the latest research and developments in sport psychology;
- being taught by experienced teachers and researchers;
- the opportunity to join the Psychology Society. This is a group run by students in collaboration with staff. Events are largely social by nature but with an academic twist.
- the chance to undertake and support in applying for a year of work placement which would entitle you to the degree of ’ BSc Hons. with work placement’;
- an option to take a year out of the degree to study abroad on the Erasmus programme;
- the opportunity to go on field trips to Amsterdam, San Francisco, and Tokyo.
Accreditation
Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditor's standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.
During the first two years of your course you will concentrate your studies on key areas of both psychology and sport science, including modules on sport psychology. Key topics include: biological psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, individual differences, sport psychology and coaching.
You will also learn about psychological research methods and the statistical analyses that researchers in psychology use.
In your final year you will study advanced modules on sport psychology and coaching as well as a course on professional skills for psychology graduates and, of course, conduct your own independent research project study in sport psychology.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and workshop practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed: formal examinations 40%; coursework, tests, essays 30%; practical or project work etc. 30%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURSIn a typical teaching week you will have up to 15 face-to-face contact hours of study and this will break down as:
Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1-2 hours of tutorials each week
Medium group teaching: 3 hours of workshops or seminars each week
Large group teaching: 10 hours of lectures each week
On top of this, you are expected to spend 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time. There Is also the option to make appointments with tutors in their available office hours.
