SPORTS STUDIES (BTEC National Certificate/Diploma)

Why should I come to Pendleton College?
Pendleton has an excellent level of achievement within the sports department with dedicated, enthusiastic and well-qualified staff. The course is an ideal foundation for those interested in a career in sports/leisure, teaching, police force, fire brigade and the armed forces.

What will I study?
Students have the opportunity to study either 12 units (Certificate - equivalent to two A-Levels) or 18 units (Diploma - equivalent to three A-Levels):

  • Health and Safety in Sport
  • Training and Fitness for Sport
  • Practical Team Sports
  • Psychology for Sports Performance
  • The Athlete's Lifestyle
  • Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport
  • Sports Coaching
  • Sport in Society
  • Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
  • Analysis of Sports Performance
  • Sports Injuries

To complete the National Diploma sutdents will take the following six additional units:

  • Organising Sports Events
  • Working with Children
  • Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport
  • Exercise, Health and Lifestyle
  • Instructing Physicl Activity and Exercise
  • Sport as a Business



What will I achieve?
Employment in the sports and leisure industry, or progression to a sport related course in a Higher Education institution; and later to a range of sports careers.

How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed via assignment work, which is marked and graded by the staff at the college whilst one assignment is externally-marked. The assignments build toward a portfolio of evidence showing full coverage of all outcomes needed.

What else will I do?
You may have the opportunity to visit a number of places such as Bolton Arena, Salford University and Wigan Rugby League club which all link in to modules taught on the course. There are also visits abroad to New York and Club La Santa, Lanzarote.
