Why should I come to Pendleton College?
Pendleton was one of the first colleges to offer the A-Level in sport and this, with the department's tradition of excellence and extremely enthusiastic and well-qualified staff, results in the achievement of excellent examination grades. This is the ideal foundation for those students who wish to follow a career path involving studying sport, physical education, sport science or physiotherapy at degree level.

What will I study?
The course is divided into sections. In year one (AS) you will study:
  • The physiological effects of adopting a healthy lifestyle
  • The short-term effect of exercise/performance and the long-term effects of training
  • Analysis of movement across a range of sporting actions
  • Acquisition of skills and the impact of psychological factors on performance
  • Physical activity - the benefits to the individual and society and the potential barriers faced by minority groups
  • Execution of skills in two roles - performer, referee, coach in a chosen physical activity
  • Analysis of own performance
  • In year two (A2) you will study:
    • Energy sources and systems
    • Elite preparation and training
    • Specialised training and sports injuries
    • The use of psychology to optimise performance
    • World games and their impact on the state and individual
    • Impact of sports technology on performers, equipment and facilities
    • The development of sport to its modern day format
    • Optimising performance in competitive conditions
    • Evaluate own performance to identify weaknesses
    • Suggesting causes of own weakness and an appropriate corrective measure.


    What will I achieve?
    Entry to Higher Education for a sport-related course and careers in health-related professions, recreation management, teaching and physiotherapy.

    How is the course assessed?
    Modular examinations are taken in January and June as well as an external moderation of practical performance.

    What else will I do?
    Whilst at college you may have the opportunity to gain nationally-recognised qualifications and coaching awards such as the Community Sports Leaders Award. There are also visits abroad to New York and Club La Santa, Lanzarote.
