Sports therapists help with prevention of and the treatment of injuries and aid rehabilitation back to optimum levels of fitness. This course will give you the specialist skills and clinical experience to enter the profession.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This course is an essential first step to becoming a sports therapist registered with the Society of Sports Therapists (SST).

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • a course that is currently accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists (SST), the governing professional body for Sports Therapists in the UK;
  • student membership of the SST, which gives you access to the society website and their student forums, sportEX publication, and insurance to obtain essential hands on experience;
  • opportunities to work alongside teaching staff, who undertake a wide range of research and consultancy work with a variety of external clients such as Coventry City Academy, Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey;
  • links with Coventry Sports Foundation and others who provide employment opportunities for our graduates. Graduate employers include Coventry Speedway team and Warwickshire Rugby;

  • placement opportunities with teams both within and outside of the University including “pitch-side” first aid support with organisations such as Coventry Rugby Club and Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey Club;
  • optional assessments to obtain industry related qualifications;
  • hands-on clinical experience of a wide range of treatment methods through a range of clinical placements undertaken in years two and three with real clients;
  • access to an extensive suite of sport science laboratories and an opportunity to work in our on-site sports therapy clinic;
  • teaching staff with links to the National Athletic Trainers Association of America and the Australian College of Sports Therapy in Melbourne which ensures the course has an international focus.

Accreditation

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This course contains a mixture of practical and theory modules to make sure you develop all the key knowledge and skills you will need in sports therapy.

In the first year you will cover anatomy, assessment of injury, immediate injury management, exercise physiology and nutrition.

In the second year you will cover assessment and treatment of injuries, trauma management, rehabilitation concepts, physiology of training and biomechanics. You will also undertake a placement to practice your first aid skills.

In the final year you will study exercise and health, emergency first response, rehabilitation/return to competition, and application of clinical reasoning skills for diagnosis and treatment of injuries. You will also be carrying out clinical work in our Sports Therapy clinic alongside our trained and experienced staff, as well as providing sports therapy support for a range of sports teams.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be delivered via a mix of theoretical lectures and practical sessions ensuring that you will be fully equipped to fulfil your role as a healthcare professional.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: practical exams 40%; coursework, tests, essays 40%; practical or project work 20%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical teaching week you will have up to 20 contact hours of study (classroom, online etc) and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 4 hours of tutorials or seminars each week

Medium group teaching: 10 hours of therapy-based practicals and labs each week

Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 18 hours each week studying and revising in your own time including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.
