Development of skills, knowledge and understanding in a specialist field. Suitable for: People pursuing a higher degree soon or immediately after obtaining their first degree, and those with considerable work experience.
About this course
Applicants should normally have a good UK honours degree, or equivalent professional or overseas qualifications, in a relevant academic discipline. For applicants with a non-technical degree, then the normal minimum entry requirement will be a second class honours degree, and their suitability for the MSc programme will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
If your first language is not English, then you need to demonstrate that you have a good command of the English language.

Course programme
The MSc in Structural Engineering is part of the Division of Civil Engineering's extensive programme of postgraduate studies and research. The course builds on the Division's renowned research expertise and industrial experience in current aspects of civil engineering.
Course Structure
There are three main elements to the course programme:
Core Modules
These provide skills generic to engineering and research. The three modules are:
- Research Methodology
- Health, Safety and Environmental Management
- Communication Skills
Specialist Modules
The specialist modules provide in-depth and advanced knowledge, and build upon the Division's recognised expertise in structural engineering. These cover the following topics:
- Finite Element Analysis
- Bridge Engineering
- Space Structures
- Innovative Structures
- Earthquake Engineering
- Assessment of Concrete Structures
Research Project
The research project accounts for half of the programme and gives you the opportunity to benefit from, and contribute to our research. At the end of the project students submit a dissertation based on their research.
Methods of Assessment
The course is assessed by coursework and examination.
