You will need to hold a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including English or the equivalent in BTEC level 2 qualifications, preferably in Health and Social Care or a related area, at Merit or Distinction grade and appropriate levels of English to support their studies at this level (determined by initial assessment). Learners who wish to progress to University will need to have a GCSE in Maths and English. For Nursing you will also be required to have GCSE Science. You may have the opportunity to complete a GCSE at Northumberland College alongside your main course. Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for 16-18yrs old candidates who would like progress to further studies in health and social care or work in the health and social care sector and have prior knowledge, qualification and/ or experience of this subject area. It is also suitable for applicants aged 19yrs and over who would like to undertake core learning about Health and Social Care enabling them to access work in the sector without progression to university. All applicants must undertake an interview and apply for DBS clearance to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

You will need to hold a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including English or the equivalent in BTEC level 2 qualifications, preferably in Health and Social Care or a related area, at Merit or Distinction grade and appropriate levels of English to support their studies at this level (determined by initial assessment). You may have the opportunity to complete a GCSE at Northumberland College alongside your main course.

What will I study on the course?

You will study exciting units including; - anatomy and physiology, - safeguarding adults and children, - psychology and sociology, - managing challenging behaviour - physiological disorders - equality and diversity and - personal and professional development. You will produce a portfolio of assignments and work products which will demonstrate that you are able to apply theory to practice. You will also be required to complete practical placement in health and social care environments.

How is the course organised

The course runs for _3___ days per week over ___1__ Years. In addition to this you will also be required to complete mandatory placement days totalling at least 100 hours.

How will my progress be assessed?

Your progress will be assessed by a range of methods including practical assessments, presentation, observations and written assignments. The course will be graded at a pass, merit or distinction.

Can I gain any extra qualifications while on the course?

You may be able to take part in training sessions supporting care within the sector and will undertake additional qualifications such as English and maths up to GCSE level (dependent upon your prior achievement and initial assessment outcomes).You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications that will help you gain employment, including Learning to Learn at Level 2

What final qualification will I get if I am successful?

EDEXCEL Subsidiary Diploma in Health and Social Care (QCF) Level 3

Next Steps

Most students will have the opportunity to progress on to the conversion award completing a second year which will enable them to achieve the BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3. After completing the subsidiary diploma course you could also enter employment into the health and social care sector in a range of roles.

Can I receive any financial support whilst I am studying?

Many of our learners study for free with a "Fee Waiver" when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18. If you are not entitled to a "Fee Waiver" you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 23 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 you will be able to apply for a 24+ Loan that cover all of your course costs. Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan.

Please note, from September 2016, anyone over 19 years of age can apply for a loan to cover all course fees for qualifying courses.

All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
