A sequence that has been developed by Middlesex Dance tutors to prepare the body to engage with the programme's core dance techniques.

Graham based technique (Cohan Method)

At Middlesex we have a strong focus on the Cohan method of Graham based technique. This is due to the prolific influence Robert Cohan CBE has had on UK dance and the direct lineage between his work and the faculty that teach in our department. The technique classes encourage an understanding of the essence of the Martha Graham vocabulary and Cohan's considered elements of dance Centring, Breathing, Gravity, Balance, Posture, Gesture, Rhythm and Moving in Space.

Sian Hopkins

Cunningham based technique at Middlesex aims to train the body to master a range of possibilities with an emphasis on rhythm, musicality, speed and control. Cunningham's four fundamental principles, upright, curve, arch and tilt, develop strength, articulation and coordination. Movement can be sequenced counter intuitively to expand the dancer's perception of what is possible.

Jazz Dance as Middlesex University is delivered primarily through studio based classes and workshops encompassing different jazz styles to develop stylistic detail and physical dexterity.

This workshop slot will focus on Hip Hop choreography with influences of Lyrical and Street Jazz, Popping and Locking. The learning of sequences and a routine will further develop participants' performance skills and technical artistry.

Humphrey based technique

Louise Kelsey

This technique began to evolve in the late 1920s, and is based on the 'giving in' to and 'resistance' to gravity. Within this there are key elements of suspension, use of breath, successional flow, oppositional motion and change of weight. This dance training develops dancers' strength, musicality and sense of individual artistry.

Release based technique

Helen Kindred

Release technique seeks to explore efficiency in moving through developing understanding of the connectivity of mind body breath. Release at Middlesex is underpinned by Bartenieff Fundamentals (a system of total mind body integration used by dancers and non dancers alike) allowing participants to explore the interplay between inner connectivity and outer expressivity in movement. Classes focus on exploring efficiency in movement, heightening sensory awareness through improvisation before progressing to play through more multi directional and dynamic movement material.

Ballet is the core foundation for many other styles of dance, including jazz and contemporary. Ballet at Middlesex progresses towards exercises that strengthen and articulate the body, developing coordination, stamina and flexibility. These fundamental principles help to prevent injuries whilst developing dancers' rhythm, musicality, speed and control.
