About this course

Entry requirements
You will need to be 16 and over and in full-time employment. You will already be working in a suitable role, or we can help you find one. If you are new to the industry or have limited experience you will need to start at Level 2.
For Level 2 you will normally require a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or above. For direct entry to Level 3, you will need a relevant Level 2 qualification and ideally English and maths at grade 4 (grade C) or above. However, all applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

Course programme

Level 2 applicable to learning support staff whose responsibilities at work are closely supervised. Level 3 is applicable to learning support staff whose role requires competence across a range of responsibilities. The frameworks provide training for the roles of: teaching; classroom and learning support assistant; special needs assistant; behaviour support assistant/coordinator; pastoral/welfare assistant; and team leader.
Level 2 Certificate Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
This qualification will enable learners to development the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in primary, secondary of special schools. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting those with disabilities or special educational needs and communication and professional relationships.

Maths and English Functional Skills
Level 3 Diploma Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
This qualification provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills required when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary or special schools.
It covers all aspects of Specialist Support including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; children with English as an additional language; and children with special needs. Personal development and reflective practice are also included.
You will gain:
Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools
Employee Rights and Responsibilities (if not already achieved on Level 2)

Additional information

Teaching & assessment Throughout your training your tutor will guide you through assessments both in the workplace and at College. You will have practical assessments, online tests and assignments. Your personal assessor will visit you regularly in the workplace (or are happy to see you more often if you need extra help). They will assist you throughout your training to help you achieve your qualification. Apprentices may need to attend college to gain additional skills but this will be discussed with you and your employer. Our teaching and assessment is underpinned by our Teaching, Learning and Assessment Strategy 2015-2020.
