Course programme

The Child Focused Practice course is the only course of its kind in the UK, which focuses on the use of systemic ideas when working directly with children and young people. This is a developing area of expertise and this course is at the cutting edge of those developments. The course is specifically aimed at professionals working with children in a wide range of contexts. Participants must have experience of working with children, and be currently working with children and families. The course looks at the development of child focused systemic ideas and skills over time, with an emphasis on exploring the processes of change and the nature of the therapeutic relationship. Additionally issues such as gender, ethics, culture and power are central. A variety of teaching methods are used: didactic, role-play, use of audio-visual material, small group discussion and case presentation and consultation. A number of external speakers present their specialist areas of interest.
Another feature of the Child Focused course is its form of delivery, which enables those of you who are geographically distant from London to access the course. It is delivered on two Mondays per month over a nine month period, thus incorporating the same number of teaching hours as its families and couples counterpart but appealing to a different student group either by virtue of the emphasis on working with children and young people or the monthly delivery which fits in with other commitments.
The course is suitable for professionals who wish to increase their capacity to work directly with children and their families/carers. This includes nurses, social workers, teachers, counsellors, other health professionals and those in front line services that wish to work systemically with clients. The course can be used as a stand alone course to increase your theory and skills in working with children, young people and their families. It also acts as the Foundation year for both the two year Postgraduate Certificate in Systemic Practice and the four year qualifying training to become a family therapist. Units
