The Production Arts Technical course will give you the opportunity to gain skills and experience in design and operating for theatre exploring lighting and sound, where you will work on a range of productions putting theory into practice.
You will also discover video projection for stage, stage management and props, marketing and events management with the opportunity during your second year to manage a team in your preferred specialist area. As a technical team you will work closely with production managers, directors and designers to create a variety of performance spaces.
We create more than 20 separate productions each year allowing for all the technical students to take on a range of exciting projects. Production Arts have strong links with the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Opera North, Howard Assembly Rooms, Backstage Academy and Production Light and Sound.

Course programme

This course is aimed at students with a particular interest in technical theatre and stage management. This course will allow you to develop your knowledge and practical skills as a lighting, sound and video production technician or member of the stage management team. Some examples of the units likely to be studied include: Year One Study Units: The Historical Context of Performance Performing Arts Business Stage Lighting Design Stage Lighting Operations Stage Sound Operations Technical Stage Operations ASM Year Two Study Units: Arts Marketing Production Planning Props Making Event Management Stage Management Visual Imagery for Production Automated Stage Lighting As a member of the production team you work alongside the designers and creative team to ensure that their vision becomes reality. To do this effectively you have to know your equipment and how to get the best from it. You will be introduced to the mechanics of the production period, learn how to programme and operate lighting, sound and video kit. You will get to investigate how and why things are plugged up the way they are, choosing one component over another, explore and experiment further with the equipment available to you and realise its creative potential. Park Lane Campus, Theatre, Technical Workshop, Allyson Lee Studio, Production Studio and classrooms. 5 A*-C GCSEs including English plus successful interview. Most of our students tend to go onto Higher Education to study degrees in various backstage areas including Technical Theatre Stage Management Events Management Set and Props Making Some will go directly into employment/apprenticeships within the performing arts industry. If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
