To recognise the importance of employability skills our Telecommunication Engineering degree focuses heavily on developing the competences that employers want such as effective team working, excellent communication skills and confident presentation skills.
You will work in our brand new telecommunication laboratory facilities and you will have access to state-of-the-art hardware platforms and software tools in telecommunications, instrumentation and control systems, VLSI design and embedded software, and PCB design and manufacturing.
This MEng route has a core industry based project module where you tackle a real problem for a company with involvement in the company throughout the year underpinning that study. During your third year of study, you will complete an independent engineering project along with specialist modules in Telecommunication. During your fourth year, you will complete a group project as well as advanced specialist modules in Telecommunication Engineering.

Level 4 (Certificate of Higher Education) will provide you with a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of general engineering and to learn how to take different approaches to solving problems. You will be able to communicate accurately and will have the qualities needed for employment requiring the exercise of some personal responsibility.
Level 5 (Diploma of Higher Education) will allow you to develop a sound understanding of the principles in Telecommunication Engineering, and to apply these more widely. Through this, you will have learnt to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. At this level will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making.
Level 6 will provide you with an understanding of a complex body of knowledge, some of it at the current boundaries of Telecommunication Engineering. Through this, you will have developed analytical techniques and problem-solving skills that can be applied in many types of employment. You will be able to evaluate evidence, arguments and assumptions, to reach sound judgements and to communicate them effectively. Finally, you will have the qualities needed for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making in complex and unpredictable circumstances.
Level 7 (Integrated Master’s degree-MEng) will enable you to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, and communicate your conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences. Finally, you will have the qualities needed for employment in circumstances requiring sound judgement, personal responsibility and initiative in complex and unpredictable professional environments.
You will experience a wide range of teaching and learning methods. This will include lectures, smaller group tutorials, laboratory sessions, problem based or design tasks, and individual and team activities. In the laboratory sessions you will learn about radio theory by using TIMs telecommunicaiton and signal processing equipment. The work place often utilises software for analysis and it is therefore vital that you are both comfortable and able to work with suitable packages. We will introduce you to specialist software, such as MATLAB, LABVIEW, MULTISIM, QUALNET and MENTUM PLANET.
You will analyse the results of your practical and simulation experiments and therefore understand and develop solutions to problems which are either too time consuming or too complicated to attempt by hand. We will help you to develop transferable skills, such as giving presentations, writing reports, working in groups and time management. Group work provides you with the opportunity to interact with others, organise and manage meetings, understand team roles and work effectively within a team environment. These skills will enable you to present yourself with confidence and communicate effectively. These are essential attributes that will make you ready for the workplace. An important aspect of the teaching, learning and assessment experience is who you will be taught by. The Telecommunication staff here are very friendly, experienced, and approachable.
