Course programme
Content
During your first year you will be studying two or three of the specialist areas, gradually learning which suits your talents best. You will decide early in the second year which of them to study in depth.
The course seeks to maximise your creative and intellectual potential through the development of your individual strengths and design philosophy. You will develop an awareness of the professional context and practice of textile design alongside the exploration of a personal creative identity and aesthetic vocabulary that is informed by historical, cultural and technical knowledge and the practical experience of making textiles.
This range of stimulating opportunities provides the context for the course ethos, which is underpinned by the belief that the textile specialism's of print, knit and weave are complementary, and engagement with different areas, materials and technologies gives a richer and more flexible textile design education. This approach provides a broad basis of experience and develops awareness of the totality of textile practice. It also develops your individual view, providing flexibility and building confidence to challenge professional conventions.
Structure
The course runs for 90 weeks full time over three years, and is divided into three Levels, (or Stages) each lasting 30 weeks. The Course has three specialist pathways. These are:
- Knit
- Weave
The approach to learning on the course is student centred with the focus on the development of the individual. There is no formula for success within the course; you are expected to take responsibility for your own ideas and to become increasingly independent in your learning as you progress.
Stage 1
Stage 1 is the design and textile foundation. You are introduced to the three principal areas of Print, Weave and Knit and to areas of visual research.
The first three terms progress from the introductory design workshops, through a series of structured projects developing your research, drawing, colour, design and technical skills in two or three of the textile specialisms alongside digital and non-traditional approaches to design, structure and surface.
Stage 2
During this stage you will undertake further research and begin developing ideas into textiles and textiles products. This substantial research allows you to apply all the knowledge and skills acquired in the first year and to experience the challenges of realising ideas into finite textiles/textile products.
The spring term marks the point where you begin to concentrate your studies in either Knit, Print or Weave. The three specialisms have distinctive requirements and characteristics in terms of subject knowledge. The aims and learning outcomes, however, are common throughout and concentrate on broadening your professional and contextual knowledge of textile design for fashion, accessories, interior, exterior and product applications while continuing to develop your design experience and identity. You will also have the opportunity to explore further digital technologies and non-traditional approaches to design for structure and surface.
Within this stage you are also introduced to professional working practices and particular aspects of industry such as market research, range building and promotional presentation, while continuing to enable you to develop your own expertise and knowledge towards more independent judgment.
Stage 3
Your final year enables you to target your strengths and weakness before embarking on your final degree project. You will start developing your personal interests, concentrating on designing textiles and surfaces for fashion, accessories, interior, exterior or product contexts.
The project-based structure of the course is replaced by self-directed study towards the realisation of your Major Project. Regular consultation with academic and technical staff will provide support and guidance as you develop your portfolio and collection towards the Degree Examination and public show.
