Birkbeck offers the only undergraduate degree combining English and theatre studies in central London, and our location in Bloomsbury close to London’s West End makes it an ideal place to study these subjects.
Taught by world-class experts, our BA Theatre Studies and English allows you to explore a diverse and exciting range of theatrical and literary histories, theories, practices, texts and contexts. Course programme
During this course you will study theatre and drama practices, theories, institutions, companies and artists from across the world, from Ancient Greece to the present day. You will also receive essential training in performance analysis, theatre and performance history, cultural theory and research methods. Alongside modules in theatre studies, you will follow a structured programme of study in English, involving attention to particular authors, texts, genres, themes and ideas.
In Year 1, you take three compulsory modules.
In Year 2, you take three compulsory modules - choosing between The Novel and Medieval and Renaissance Literatures - and choose one option module in theatre studies.
In Year 3, you take one compulsory module, choose two option modules in English and one option module in theatre studies.
In Year 4, you take one compulsory module, choose one option module in English and complete an independent research project.
